Trenton Music Makers’ After School Program (2020 to 2024)
In January 2020, Westminster officially adopted the Trenton Music Makers (TMM) After School Program. Due to COVID-19, starting in March 2020, the TMM held classes via zoom until they held their 4-week summer camp. In September 2021, TMM’s After School Program at Westminster expanded to five days a week. Due to a financial crisis TMM had to move to a smaller facility and downsize staff and children enrolled.
Since 1970 Westminster has been a Center Dedicated to Education
In 1970, Westminster dedicated its church facility to educating children when it opened its classrooms to the Headstart preschool program because we know that the best way out of poverty is a good education.
The Get SET After School Program ensured that students grades 1st through 8th read at or above reading level by third grade. Local university and high school students served as tutors and mentors.
Every weekday from 3-5:45 pm, students from five local K to 8 schools benefited from the program. The typical daily routine included homework assistance, mentoring, reading improvement through the LitArt curriculum, and activities such as crafts, drama, dance, music, technology, and various recreational options.
The Get SET After School Program Legacy:
The Get SET After School Program left a legacy and was a blessing to hundreds of children and youth of Trenton for 30 years. Volunteers played a vital role in Get SET's program. Our children and youth loved spending quality time with students from. Rider University, Princeton University, Trenton Central High School, and Lawrenceville High School.
A nutritious hot meal was served daily through the federal At-Risk Afterschool CCAFP Program. Get SET helped to battle childhood obesity, a leading cause of diabetes among children of color.
Parents were also encouraged to attend classes through The ESL School at Westminster. They received access to information and training in order to more effectively support their child's academic, psychological, sociological, and emotional development.
